Estimated GFR
An estimate of how well the kidneys filter blood, calculated from creatinine (sometimes cystatin C), age, and sex. A value persistently below 60 is the threshold used to define reduced kidney function.
This page is general wellness education, not medical advice. Your own lab’s reference range and your clinician’s interpretation always take precedence.
Typical reference range
| Group | General range |
|---|---|
| Adults | ≥90 normal; 60–89 mildly reduced; <60 for ≥3 months defines CKD |
Units: mL/min/1.73m2. Ranges vary by lab and assay — read yours against the range printed on your own report.
What high Estimated GFR can mean
- Generally not concerning; very high can reflect hyperfiltration
What low Estimated GFR can mean
- Chronic kidney disease
- Dehydration
- Aging
- High blood pressure / diabetes
- Some medications
