Non-HDL Cholesterol

Total cholesterol minus HDL — it captures all the atherogenic (artery-clogging) particles in one number, including LDL and triglyceride-rich remnants. Often a better risk marker than LDL alone.

This page is general wellness education, not medical advice. Your own lab’s reference range and your clinician’s interpretation always take precedence.

Typical reference range

GroupGeneral range
AdultsGeneral target < 130 mg/dL (lower for higher risk)

Optimal-band note: Non-HDL goals are typically ~30 mg/dL above the LDL goal; <100 is a common target for those at higher cardiovascular risk. Discuss your goal with a clinician.

Units: mg/dL. Ranges vary by lab and assay — read yours against the range printed on your own report.

What high Non-HDL Cholesterol can mean

  • High atherogenic particle burden
  • Insulin resistance
  • Saturated fat intake
  • Genetics

What low Non-HDL Cholesterol can mean

  • Lipid-lowering therapy
  • Low particle burden
